A Vision, A Prayer

New Year’s Day I was walking on some old logging roads.
Mostly second growth. The land didn’t have the luminous glory, the intact
power, or the deep magic of the old growth forests. But it was pretty, green
and soothing.
Then I became lost and wound up in some patch of clear cuts, slag
heaps everywhere, hillsides of tree stumps. The hurt of the land overwhelmed me
and tears streamed down my face. I started praying to the earth Devas for
healing. But that didn’t feel right. They’d only get done healing the land, and
the next tree massacre would occur. I didn’t know what to pray for.
And then an answer slipped into my mind. What if Humboldt
County was paid carbon credits for growing trees? What if we were paid enough that
it was more profitable to grow the trees than to cut them? Then companies like
Coca Cola wouldn’t have to displace indigenous people in the Amazon in order to
get carbon credits by buying their forests and then not letting them live
there. Instead, they could pay to have the land in Humboldt County reforested.
We could become an oxygen capital! (Perhaps tourists would come here just to
breathe the beautiful tree-green air.)
Really, in the long run, it is certainly more valuable to
be growing forests than cutting them. So, if it feels right to you, help me
pray for a vision like this, or even better than I can now imagine, so that our
wounded lands can be restored.
