SLOW DOWN, GET QUIET, AND PUT IT ALL TOGETHER: MOVEMENT, BREATH, AND IMAGINATION
T’ai Chi stimulates and relaxes people at the same time. Concentration and Coordination are enhanced; reflexes are honed. Western clinical studies have shown that T’ai Chi:
- Improves balance and reduces falls
- Lowers blood pressure
- Boosts the immune system
- Elevates mood—reduces tension, depression, anger, and confusion
- Increases lung capacity
- Reduces arthritis pain
T’ai Chi helps back pain because it promotes a relaxed, upright posture; activates and strengthens the deep stabilizing muscles that support the lower back; reduces stiffness; increases flexibility and mobility; and offers a positive focus for the mind—T’ai Chi is soothing and fun.
Margy Emerson has been practicing T’ai Chi for 28 years and teaching for 18. She spent six years with her original teacher, Kao Ching-hua, who learned as a girl in pre-Revolutionary China.
